Marinus II

Incorrectly called Martin III in the Middle Ages, Marinus was a priest at St. Ciriacus when Alberic II of Spoleto nominated him to succeed Stephen VIII in 942. Marinus remained loyal to Alberic throughout his four-year papacy. Little is known about Marinus' early life, and his papacy was uneventful. He restored churches and encouraged monastic discipline. He also defended Monte Cassino against an encroaching bishop.
