Marinus I Tuscan by birth, Marinus believed that Marinus and Martin are the same name, so he called himself Martin II. He began his clerical career at 12 as the deacon of Nicholas I. He also served under Adrian II and John VIII, whom Marinus succeeded in 882. Although he was elected and consecrated without the consent of Emperor Charles III, Marinus made amends at Nonantula. His short papacy was peaceful. He died in 884. Karen Rae Keck
