Lucius I Lucius was elected bishop of Rome in 253, and shortly after his election, Emperor Gallus exiled him to Civitavecchia. The pope was willing to be martyred; however, the emperor released him. Cyprian of Carthage praised Pope/St. Lucius for his Christian conduct. Little is known about Lucius' papacy. Novatian continued to oppose the pope's policy of allowing the lapsed to return to communion after suitable penance. Lucius died in 254 and has become the patron of Copenhagen. Karen Rae Keck
