Julius I A defender of Nicene Christianity against Arianism, St. Julius I was elected to the bishopric of Rome in 337. When Arians deposed Patriarch Athanasius of Alexandria and Bishop Marcellus of Ancyra, Julius defended them and gave them refuge in Rome. He called a synod in 340 to clear the two of the charges brought against them. He also convoked a synod to affirm the right of bishops to appeal to the pope for redress. Athanasius returned to Alexandria in 345, and he included correspondence from Julius in his Apology against the Arians. Julius, who died in 352, is credited with the reorganizing of the papal chancery. Karen Rae Keck
