John XVIII Giovanni Fasano was elected pope in 1004 through the influence of Crescentius III, to whom he may have been related. Three years later, he confirmed the see of Bamberg. When he died in 1009, he was known as a monk of the monastery of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Karen Rae Keck
