John XIII

The papacy of John XIII (965-972) was fairly peaceful. Bishop of Narni when elected pope, John was kidnapped by Roman nobles and prisoner in the Campania for a year. Otto I rescued him, and in the following year, John crowned Otto's son co-emperor Otto II. John also called a synod at Ravenna to condemn clerical marriage. In addition, John supported the Cluniac reform movement. In 972, the year of his death, John crowned Theophano empress, just before she married Otto II.
