Eugene I Pope/St. Eugene I was brought up in the church and was elected pope in 654, while Pope/St. Martin I was alive in prison. Eugene refused to recognize the monothelite Peter as Patriarch of Constantinople. To resolve the dispute, Eugene sent envoys to Constantinople, who returned with a compromise: the understanding of Christ's wills should be that each nature of Christ has a separate will but Christ as a person had only one will. The Roman clergy rejected the statement, and Eugene also rejected it. Eugene died in 657. Karen Rae Keck
