Ceolwulf
King of Northumbria from 729-737, St. Ceolwulf was known for his learning and piety, and during his reign, he fostered the growth of education and of monasticism. Two years after his coronation, he was briefly deposed and forcibly tonsured. After his release, he reigned for six years and abdicated to become a monk at Lindisfarne, where he died c. 764. Bede dedicated his Ecclesiastical History to Ceolwulf, then king.
Ceolwulf was buried near Cuthbert, and in 830, the relics of both were taken to Norham-on-Tweed. Ceolwulf's head was later translated to Durham.
