Anicetus

A native of Emesa, Pope/St. Anicetus led the Roman church from c. 155 until c. 166. Polycarp of Smyrna visited him to discuss the dating of Easter and to persuade the pope that 14 Nisan was the correct time at which to celebrate the Feast of Feasts. Anicetus was the first pope to make a public statement against heresy, when he condemned Montanism. Like his predecessor, Hygenius, Anicetus contended with the gnostics.
